Eminent domain by property type

What a taking does depends heavily on what kind of property it reaches.

Get Help See how compensation works

North Carolina combines fast growing metropolitan areas with a great deal of working and rural land. A strip of frontage means one thing to a house in a Charlotte suburb, another to a retail site on a commercial corridor, and another again to a field that a corridor cuts in two.

The take may look identical on the plan sheet and the loss be entirely different.

Rural land is not a smaller version of a suburban lot. On a farm, a corridor can sever irrigation, block equipment movement between fields and leave headlands that cannot be worked. Those are compensation questions, not inconveniences.
